Musculupat® Advanced Training for Physical Therapists
For those of you who are licensed physical therapists—and want to learn more treatment techniques Sign up for trainingExpand your physical therapy toolkit with the Musculupat® training program
The Musculupat® training program is for physical therapists who want to expand their professional expertise with additional practical and holistic treatment methods.
As a physical therapist, you already have a strong understanding of the body’s anatomy, function, and movement. With the Musculupat® training program, you’ll build on this foundation and gain new tools for manual therapy. You’ll learn to combine your physical therapy knowledge and exercise programs with various treatment techniques, enabling you to offer your clients a more cohesive and personalized treatment plan.
This program is particularly relevant for those who want to focus more on treatment, pain management, and the body’s interconnected systems—and who would like to have more options when exercise and traditional physical therapy approaches aren’t enough on their own.
As a physical therapist, you have already completed several of the program’s core courses. Therefore, there will be courses such as Anatomy/Physiology and Pathology that you will not need to take, and certain courses will be electives. Your program of study will be tailored to your existing academic background.
The Musculupat® training program doesn’t teach you a new way to be a physical therapist; it gives you more opportunities to help each individual client.
Focus on holistic treatment
As a Musculupat® practitioner, you work with the body from a holistic perspective, combining Western physiology and anatomy with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). You’ll learn to understand and treat the body through its meridian pathways and the five elements. The program provides you with in-depth insight and techniques in massage, reflexology, acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, and much more. By combining different methods and approaches, you’ll achieve better and more lasting results for your clients—something many experience for the first time after a Musculupat® treatment.
This program goes a step further than traditional massage and body therapy by combining multiple techniques in a single treatment. You’ll also learn about Functional Neurology (Z-Health theory) and the importance of the mind-body connection. We teach you how to conduct client-therapist conversations so that you’ll be able to provide holistic treatment. A treatment session is more than just the treatment itself; communication is a major part of it. That’s why we also teach communication and psychology.
Practical and theoretical training
You’ll learn a wide range of treatment techniques such as myofascial release, joint release, pain understanding, pulsation and stretching. We emphasize that you understand the anatomy and physiology of the body at a solid professional level – a core competency that makes you a complete practitioner. Unlike many other body therapy programs, anatomy and physiology are a mandatory part of our curriculum, as we believe this is essential for understanding the body and thus helping our clients.
Instructors
In the Musculupat program, you’ll be taught by a dedicated and enthusiastic team of instructors with extensive experience in treatment, movement, and the body’s functions.
Our instructors work daily in their own clinics with their own clients and in their areas of specialization. This means that the instruction is based on real-world experience from clinical practice, and that you’ll be taught by professionals who are up to date on the challenges that practitioners face in the clinic.
The team includes a physical therapist, an osteopath, an acupuncturist, a musculopath, and a body therapist, among others. Each instructor contributes their specific knowledge and professional perspective, so that you, as a student, gain a well-rounded and practical understanding of the body.
What all the instructors have in common is that they are passionate about their field, love to teach, and want to pass on their knowledge to new practitioners.
A protected title
Once you have completed your exams, you can proudly call yourself a Musculupat®, a protected title that may only be used by practitioners who have completed this training program. We train you to become a competent, professional, and holistic practitioner.
Take the next step in your career, become a Musculupat® practitioner, and make a difference in your clients’ health and well-being.

Meridian theory & the 5 elements
Understanding the body’s energy pathways and the 5 elements
The meridians and the five elements form the very foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). When you learn to “read” the flow of energy (Qi) through these pathways, you gain a whole new perspective on pain, imbalances, and healing, as well as a powerful complement to your knowledge of Western anatomy.
You will learn:
The Meridian Chart from Head to Toe
The location, direction, and function of the 12 main meridians, as well as the Ren and Du channels, and how they are connected to specific organs and muscles.Yin/Yang logic & 5-Element cycle
Understand how wood, fire, earth, metal and water interact and how imbalances show up as muscle tension, pain or emotional patterns.Practical application in massage
Integrate meridian strokes, acupressure points and elemental thinking into your existing techniques for deeper, more holistic results.Acupuncture at distal points
You’ll also learn how to use needles on the arms and legs, where you can treat all the meridians. The Bridge to Western Anatomy
See how meridian pathways overlap with fascial lines and trigger point patterns, and use this combined knowledge for more precise treatment.
Meridian teachings give you an extra “diagnostic layer” that opens up new treatment options when classical anatomy alone does not explain the client’s problem.
Reflexology Techniques
Here, you’ll learn to work with zones and reflex areas—primarily on the feet—as a supplement to your other treatments. You’ll be introduced to various protocols for the body’s systems, with a special focus on the musculoskeletal system, so you can apply these techniques in a targeted manner when working with muscles, joints, and bodily function.
This course provides you with practical experience in specific massage and pressure techniques that can be combined with massage and other forms of manual therapy. The goal is not to train you as a reflexologist, but to provide you with a solid and practical foundation so that you can incorporate reflexology techniques as an additional method in your treatments.
This gives you yet another tool to take a more holistic approach to your clients’ issues and support the body’s own ability to achieve balance and recovery.
Ear Acupuncture, including 5-point acupuncture
In the Ear Acupuncture course, you will learn to work with the ear as a microsystem in which the entire body is represented. This means that the ear can be used as a point of entry to support the treatment of many different conditions, both physical and mental.
You will learn to locate relevant ear points, assess which points are active, and design a targeted treatment plan based on the client’s symptoms and needs. This course will give you a practical understanding of how ear acupuncture can be used as a standalone treatment or as a supplement to other forms of treatment.
As part of the course, you’ll also learn 5-point acupuncture, also known as NADA. This method is often used to calm the nervous system and can be employed to help with stress, anxiety, sleep problems, and various forms of addiction. 5-point acupuncture can also be used to enhance the effects of other treatments and provide the client with a deeper sense of balance and relaxation.
Joint Mobilization and Understanding
In the course “Joint Mobilization and Understanding,” you’ll learn to work more effectively with the body’s joints and the issues that can arise when mobility is restricted. You’ll gain a basic understanding of the structure and function of the joints and how they interact with muscles, connective tissue, nerves, and surrounding structures.
This course provides you with the tools to assess whether a problem stems primarily from the joints, muscles, connective tissue, or nerves. You will learn to recognize typical symptoms and range-of-motion limitations, as well as to apply safe and precise manual techniques for joint mobilization.
The goal is to give you a more nuanced understanding of the musculoskeletal system so that, as a practitioner, you can better identify the root cause of your client’s issues rather than just treating the symptoms.
Understanding pain
Functional Neurology
In the Functional Neurology course, we explore the role of the nervous system in the body’s function, movement, pain, and balance. Drawing inspiration from Z-Health, you’ll learn how the brain and nervous system play a central role in everything from muscle tension and posture to coordination, stability, and the perception of pain.
This course provides an introduction to how simple tests and targeted exercises can be used to work with the nervous system as part of treatment and training. This may include, among other things, exercises for joints, balance, vision, the vestibular system, breathing, and other areas that affect the body’s ability to function optimally.
Functional Neurology gives you, as a practitioner, a deeper understanding of why the body sometimes reacts with pain, tension, weakness, or imbalance—and how the nervous system can be actively incorporated into the process of improving function.
Treatment techniques
You will learn to understand and perform several treatment techniques, such as pulsation and stretching, in close collaboration between client and therapist.
Psychology/Communication (elective)
Health psychology tools for the professional practitioner
This course won’t make you a psychologist—and that’s not the point. The goal is to give you a solid, practical understanding of the health psychology aspects of stress, anxiety, pain, and other sources of distress, so you can communicate confidently, provide optimal support to your clients, and know when it’s time to refer them to another professional.
You will learn:
Responses to Stress
Understand how the body and mind interact in situations of stress, chronic pain, and anxiety—and how this affects your client’s experience of your treatment.Communication in the Clinic
Active listening, open-ended questions, reflection, and clear boundaries, so that the client feels heard and at ease from the very first minute.Health Psychology Models
The biopsychosocial approach, coping strategies, and placebo mechanisms—theory that makes sense when working with real people.Warning Signs & Limits
Learn to spot red flags such as widespread anxiety, signs of depression, or somatization—situations where manual therapy alone is not enough—and when you should refer a patient to a doctor or psychologist. The Therapist’s Role
: Professional Boundaries, Self-Care, and Ethics—Take Care of Yourself While Taking Care of Others.
The Psychology course doesn’t give you a therapist certificate, but a language and tools that make your physical treatments safer, more holistic – and significantly more effective.
Sports acupuncture / Dry Needling
Needle precise, heal faster
Dry needling is the modern, Western version of acupuncture: Needles are inserted directly into trigger points and tight fascial lines to relax muscle tissue, relieve pain, and speed up recovery, especially in athletes.
You will learn:
Neurophysiology & Evidence-
: Understand how needle stimulation affects motor end plates, increases blood flow, and triggers central pain modulation.Safe Needle Handling
Hygiene, contraindications, angles, and depths—so you can work efficiently and safely.Precise Trigger Point Localization
Learn how to locate and treat the most relevant trigger points in the neck, arms, hips, thighs, and lower legs, including referred pain zones.Integrated Treatment Protocol
Combine dry needling with physical therapy massage, stretching, or cupping for faster tissue healing and improved mobility.Acute & Chronic Sports Injuries
Tailored acupuncture treatment for muscle strains, tendinopathies, and myofascial pain to get athletes back in the game as soon as possible.Client Communication
Explain the procedure, how it will feel, and the expected reaction so that even those who are skeptical of acupuncture feel at ease.
Sports acupuncture/dry needling gives you a highly precise tool that can release deep tension in minutes and give your clients a significantly shorter path from injury to peak performance.
The Nervous System
The nervous system plays a central role in the body’s ability to respond, regulate, and heal. When the nervous system is under stress or out of balance, the body may have a harder time releasing tension, recovering, and returning to a natural state of calm and balance.
That is why we focus on the nervous system as a key component of several of our treatment methods. It’s not just about treating muscles, joints, and tissues, but also about understanding how the body responds to stress, pain, strain, and imbalance over time.
In this course, you’ll learn how various techniques can affect the nervous system and help the body relax. These may include 5-point acupuncture, breathing exercises, gentle manual techniques, and other methods that support the regulation of the nervous system.
When the nervous system is calmed, the body is better able to recover, heal, and respond to treatment. This gives you, as a practitioner, a deeper understanding of why some clients need calm, security, and regulation before their bodies can let go and bring about change.
Targeted Treatments
As a Musculupat practitioner, you’ll learn to work with the body using a holistic approach, in which both physical and mental aspects can be incorporated into treatment. Some practitioners choose to focus primarily on muscles, joints, connective tissue, and pain issues, while others work more with the nervous system, stress, emotional strain, and the body’s internal balance.
For this reason, a Musculupat can address many different types of issues, depending on the client’s needs and the practitioner’s own area of expertise.
In this program, we work with specialized treatment protocols that combine multiple techniques into targeted treatments. These may include, for example, protocols for stress , menstrual cramps, digestive issues such as constipation, or other symptoms where the body needs support to regain its balance.
The protocols provide you, as a practitioner, with a concrete framework to work from, while also teaching you how to tailor treatment to each individual. The goal is not only to treat the symptom, but to understand the underlying causes and develop a treatment plan that best supports the body.
Myofascial Release
Free the fascia, amplify the results
Elastic, well-functioning fascia is the key to free movement and long-term pain relief. This module gives you the specialized tools to target the connective tissue – both with your hands and with moving cupping (Silicone cups).
You will learn:
The Function and Importance of Fascia
Understand how connective tissue binds muscles, nerves, and organs together—and why restrictions in this tissue can lead to stiffness, reduced performance, and pain.Manual connective tissue technique
Slow, deep strokes and stretches that break down adhesions, improve glide, and restore elasticity.Moving Cupping (Silicone Cups)
Use vacuum cups dynamically along fascial lines to quickly increase blood flow, release trigger points, and stimulate lymphatic drainage.Indications & Contraindications
When is connective tissue massage the best option—and when should you choose a different method?Client Communication
Explain the process and any temporary marks left by the cups so that the client feels comfortable and informed.
Releasing the fascia will increase mobility, reduce pain and make your other treatments even more effective – a must-have in every masseuse’s toolbox.
Stretch Massage Therapy
Extend muscles, extend results
Add dynamic and static stretching to your treatments and give clients the tools to maintain the effect at home.
You will learn:
Assisted stretches on the table
PNF and MET techniques (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation and muscle energy) for the hips, hamstrings, lower back, shoulders, and neck, so you can safely and effectively lengthen your muscles.Active Mobility Exercises
Use the client’s own muscle strength during stretching to achieve greater ROM (range of motion) and better neural control.Contraindications & Safety
Identify situations where stretching should be avoided (acute injuries, hypermobility, inflammation) and adjust your grip and angle accordingly.Home Exercises
Give the client tips on stretches to do at home so they can continue stretching between treatments.Progression Strategy
Guide the client on when and how to increase intensity or duration to achieve lasting results without overexertion.
By incorporating assisted stretching into your session, you provide immediate freedom of movement, and with home exercises, you ensure that the benefits last long after the client has left the table.
